Tech Employee Must-Have Benefits

Published: October 2, 2014 Author: Clearpoint Tags: Information Technology

Top IT talent can be hard to come by. If you're looking to attract and retain skilled IT pros, you need to offer not only competitive salaries, but also the types of benefits tech employees really want.

Beyond a great health care package, what can you provide to attract top IT talent to your organization? Consider following the lead of IT dream employers like Google, Microsoft, and Facebook, and offering benefits that hit the right notes for tech employees.

Flex time / flexible scheduling

The standard 9 to 5 schedule is tough for many modern workers and families to handle. IT pros tend to work a lot of hours anyway--so they really appreciate the ability to adjust their work schedules around their lifestyles. For many IT employees, non-traditional schedules like 7 to 3, 8 to 4, or even four-day workweeks of 10-hour days are ideal. Others just want the ability to take a few hours off during the day for errands or family functions, and make those hours up later.

Giving your IT employees the freedom to create a flexible schedule can help you win their loyalty, and improve overall morale and productivity.

Free food

It may be a little cliché, but feeding your IT employees for free is a great way to make them happy. IT is a busy and demanding profession, and it's tough finding the time to supply your own food outside of working hours--and remembering to bring it to work.

Google is the gold standard for free food benefits. The employee program at the tech giant includes unlimited free beverages and gourmet snacks, plus free breakfast, lunch, and dinner at one of more than 25 cafes on the Google campus.

While your company doesn't have to take things that far, offering a constant supply of free beverages and snacks plus a regular free meal--such as buying lunch for everyone at the office once a week--can really sweeten the deal for IT employees.

Unusual perks

Google provides employees with on-site massages and free rental cars to run errands. Software developer company JAWA offers a Zen-like "nap room" where employees can grab a few winks on a cot, or in an "energy pod" chair. At The Motley Fool, employees have access to a game room with pool, foosball, Playstation, Atari, and satellite TV.

Non-traditional benefits like these make your company a great place to work, where IT employees will be happy to stick around. Give your employees a way to grab some downtime on the job, and they'll stay refreshed, productive, and satisfied.

Simple appreciation

Many employers overlook the power of two little words: "Thank you." Your IT employees want to know they're doing a good job, and merely taking the time to acknowledge their accomplishments and thank them for their great work can make a huge difference.

There are many easy, inexpensive ways you can show appreciation for your employees. Certificates, spotlight boards, and even handwritten thank-you notes give IT workers something tangible that not only says their efforts are appreciated, but that others can see--and strive to earn themselves.

With some creativity and forethought, you can put together a powerful benefits package that helps you attract and retain top IT talent, and makes your organization a dream job for IT pros.
