In the grand scheme of things, Internet marketing professionals are a relatively new breed. However, marketing and search specialists are gaining ground in terms of salary, recognition, and international significance.
The latest industry survey from marketing analytics provider Moz shows that budgets allotted to online marketing professionals are on the rise. What's more, the median salary increases through experience--sometimes significantly.
Here are some of the results from the Moz 2014 Industry Survey.
Marketing roles: The highest and lowest salaries
Moz breaks down the latest survey data by role, and by experience. In terms of marketing roles, engineering topped the list while web design dropped to the bottom. The top three Internet marketing roles by salary are:
Coming very close to the top are Web Analytics at $74,375 and the general Marketing at $73,034. These top roles suggest a few possible trends: One, that companies are more focused on great user experiences that lead to higher sales conversions; and two, today's highest earning online marketers are either highly specialized, or working in more blended roles.
The three lowest paid Internet marketing roles for 2014 are:
Again, these roles suggest a trend toward specialization and blended roles. All three of these categories can be considered under the more general Marketing--and professionals who focus on more common skills can expect lower salaries.
Salaries by experience
Experience counts in every industry, and this holds true for Internet marketing professionals. Accompanying its breakdown of salary by experience, Moz comments, "Even in our relatively young industry, people with more experience commanded much higher salaries."
The survey lists median salaries in relation to experience as:
Gains in salary commensurate with experience are significant, particularly from the 1-year to the 5-year mark--in which salaries can more than double. Even those with 2 years of experience can command a significantly higher salary than entry-level professionals.
Beyond salary: The changing world of online marketing
Other key data for marketing professionals covered by the survey includes the most frequently used SEO and social media platforms, the top activities and metrics employed by online marketers, in-house versus agency or consultant professionals, and more. Budgets are a significant issue, with the survey reporting:
Content marketing is also a hot commodity for Internet marketing professionals, particularly in light of Google's Hummingbird algorithm and the increasing prevalence of (not provided) disrupting keyword strategies. Every group of marketers included content marketing as a top-5 activity, and 79% of consultants reported offering content creation as a service. Additionally, 71% of respondents noted a year-over-year demand increase for content marketing.
With greater demand for experience and specialized skills, online marketing professionals can expect a strengthening industry and rising salaries for the years to come. If you are looking for marketing positions in Houston TX, contact our team today.
