Who Killed Innovation?

We hear it all the time. Producing good work isn't enough. "Innovate or die - and fast!" we're told. Today's fastest growing companies (think Facebook) have made "continuous rapid innovation" into a strategic mantra.

Indeed, this week's final expedition of the space shuttle provides an excuse to contemplate innovation and how an organization nurtures or hinders it. If you're pondering ways to cultivate innovation, consider these two blog posts about common barriers.

John Sullivan cautions you to beware of "innovation killers" on your staff who lurk in brainstorming sessions, efficiently shooting down new ideas. Be sure to read the comments - Mr. Sullivan's readers rightly point out that the so-called idea assassins may simply be playing by management's rules.

The rules? The 10 commandments of quashing creativity are neatly restated by Keith Sawyer in this post, and were first published by Rosabeth Moss Kanter in her 1983 book, The Change Masters.
