Top Tech Jobs Growing in 2014

Published: February 6, 2014 Author: Clearpoint Tags: Information Technology

The tech sector can expect modest but steady growth in 2014, with more job opportunities opening up as businesses continue to recover. This increasing demand for IT professionals is good news all around--as it translates to better prospects and, in many cases, higher salaries.

Right now, employers are looking for IT pros with experience in tried-and-true, universal platforms, and those with certifications in the fastest-growing areas of the tech industry. These expanding areas are the current Big Three of IT: Mobile, cloud, and Big Data.

Mobile app developers and wireless experts

It shouldn't be surprising that mobile is a hot topic in the tech arena. Both in diversity and sheer numbers, mobile use has exploded in recent years--and just about every business can benefit from getting into mobile. Whether it's developing company-specific mobile apps or managing a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) workplace, mobile is seeing definite job growth.

Mobile app developers are in demand, with more users and more devices like mini tablets and hybrid phones entering the market. There's also a high need for in-house and third-party device managers to work with employee-owned device programs. Wireless engineers and security professionals will see more opportunities in 2014 according to data from research firm Foote Partners LLC, which reports that certified and non-certified wireless skills have gained 17.7 percent value to employers in the past 9 months.

Cloud professionals

The benefits of the cloud for business are substantial. Decreased costs, scalable service, improved security, and easier upgrades are just a few of the advantages offered by moving storage, applications, and even infrastructure to the cloud.

Plenty of organizations have been in the planning stages of cloud implementation, and are now moving to the rollout / changeover phase. This means more job opportunities are being created for cloud experts, both in-house and outsourced. In fact, on the employer IT survey from Foote, cloud skills outperformed all 348 IT skills and 293 certifications listed.

Some of the new opportunities for these IT experts include cloud architects and solution architects, cloud administrators, and cloud integration specialists.

The Big Data boom

If there's a single hot buzzword in IT this year, it's Big Data. Every business wants to capitalize on the vast streams of information being gathered from consumers across the country and around the world, and they'll need experts to help them make sense of it all.

Database developers and database administrators can expect to find plenty of job options with excellent salaries. Over the last six months, according to the Foote survey, database skills have grown 5.7% in the IT Skills and Certifications Pay Index.

Some of the fastest growing job markets for this skill set include database developers and architects, data analysts, and technical specialists. Hot skill subsets for Big Data professionals include NoSQL, Apache, HBase, and prescriptive tools and analytics.
