Tools for Mobile Development: PhoneGap

Published: July 5, 2013 Author: Clearpoint Tags: Information Technology

Everyone has a smartphone or tablet glued to their hands these days, so it's no surprise that software developers--including corporate America--are taking a mobile-first approach. However, launching a new program or web app that's compatible across all mobile platforms can be challenging.

Programmers have traditionally developed separate versions of their apps for heavy hitters like Android and iOS, with fewer programs making their way to less popular platforms. Now, corporations in particular are looking for one code base to support multiple platforms, and there are plenty of tools available for developers to do that. One of the most popular is PhoneGap.

What is PhoneGap?

A distribution of the Adobe Cordova platform, PhoneGap is an open-source framework using standard web APIs on several platforms. Obviously, the framework supports Android and iOS, but it also works with Symbian and webOS. And it's completely free for use with any app--free, open-source, commercial, or combinations.

PhoneGap is standard compliant, relying on HTML, JavaScript, and CSS to bridge apps with mobile devices. The PhoneGap website states that apps created with this framework are "future-proofed" to continue working with browsers as they evolve.

Companies use PhoneGap and similar products to bridge the divide between developers who use Javascript and HTML5 and those who use Java and Objective-C. It's much faster to create hybrid apps with HTML5 and Javascript, and there are far more developers working with these languages than there are straight native code developers using Objective-C or Java.

Advantages for developers

This gap between what corporations want out of mobile development, and what they can get with their in-house resources, creates a great opportunity for developers. Big companies are looking for feature-rich mobile applications with cross-platform functionality on a single code base, and tools like PhoneGap can help you deliver.

If you want to capitalize on mobile app development, start with at least Javascript and HTML5, and consider digging in to Objective-C, Java, Python, or Ruby. You'll find plenty of opportunities in the mobile corporate world, just waiting for your skills.
