Houston Job Market Update

Published: July 6, 2011 Author: Clearpoint Tags: News

At the 2011 mid-year point we're happy to report that the employment outlook for Greater Houston continues to improve. Data indicate that the local economy is humming (6.6% growth rate)1 and that more companies plan to hire in Q3 (net 18%) than in Q2 (net 12%)2.

The hiring outlook varies by industry, with the fastest growth in the information and manufacturing sectors (the latter includes parts of the oil & gas industry). The statistics seem to indicate that the information and media sectors are great places to be in Houston right now.

The trend at Clearpoint Creative follows the numbers. Top candidates again have their pick of jobs and sometimes receive multiple offers. We've even seen some clients miss the chance to hire their first choice when they couldn't make a decision quickly.

The picture is not as rosy in other sectors of the economy. Education and government sectors, for example, plan to decrease hiring in the next quarter. 2 Unemployment remains at 8.5% even with the overall increase in hiring because Houston's labor force is growing.1

Tell us how things look from where you sit. Is it getting easier to find work? Does your company intend to hire (for any type of job) in the second half of 2011?
