When Houston temporarily reverted to a pre-industrial age after Hurricane Ike, the vast and intricate infrastructure that normally reverberates unnoticed throughout our city was revealed to us overnight with its spectacular failure. We brushed our teeth by candlelight and held our phones high overhead in search of signals. We stared, unbelieving, at lifeless gasoline pumps. We pined for the simple favor of a functioning traffic signal, a bag of ice. These were the mere worries of the lucky, whose houses and workplaces remained intact after the storm.
The near total shut down of Houston businesses was even more alarming. The economic engines of the city ground to a halt. Hand-in-hand with vanishing revenues went the lost wages and unpaid bills of Houston’s workforce. Like fellow workers citywide, many Clearpoint employees simply could not go back to work.
We salute the intrepid companies that were open immediately after the storm. We are incredibly proud of the many Clearpoint employees who never missed an hour of work, in spite of hurricane damage that made it difficult to do anything normal.
Many more of our clients were forced to remain closed. When they did open, employees still struggled with the storm’s effects, whether it was the mess at home or shuttered schools and daycares. At ordinary staffing companies, this hardship simply has to be endured. At Clearpoint, we do things differently.
Clearpoint carries business disruption insurance to protect our company and our employees from this kind of harm, and our insurance company agreed to cover our Ike-related claim. We used these funds to pay our employees for the hours they missed work due to hurricane preparation and recovery.
As soon as Clearpoint received the insurance check we invited our employees to report the number of hours they had missed at work due to the storm, and we delivered hurricane relief paychecks for those hours on the very next pay date.
